|Holston Teacher Makes Professional Development a Priority||12-15-2014||
Holston High School Business Teacher Joy Munsey believes that she can serve the needs of students more effectively by continuing her professional development and learning all she can about the world of business and finance. This summer Mrs. Munsey attended the Graduate Teachers' Workshop at the New York Stock Exchange. She spent four days at the New York Stock Exchange and heard from experts in the field. Those present also made three trips to the Exchange Floor and were treated to lunch each day at the NYSE with brokers. They were also invited to visit the investment floor at Chase Bank.

First year Patrick Henry High School agriculture students in Mr. Thayer's shop class completed a project that incorporated many different tasks and teamwork. Students who successfully completed their area of study and skills, focused on one particular area.
|High Point Elementary School Third Grade Students Study Ancient Greece||12-12-2014||
High Point Elementary School third graders recently traveled to Ancient Greece. On their voyage, students in Mrs. Widner's and Mr. Davidson's social studies classes were directed to tour the area and learn as much as they could about the Grecian culture. The Acropolis was one of the vacation hotspots due to the Parthenon being located there.

Just as the typical sixth-grader gets nervous about giving a class presentation, Delegate Israel O’Quinn used to experience anxiety when he spoke in front of others! He shared some of his strategies for coping with anxiety with Damascus Middle School sixth-graders during their Life Skills lesson on Friday, October 31.
|AEP Read to Me Day at Greendale Elementary||12-11-2014||
Greendale’s second and third graders had the privilege of listening to Appalachian Power employee, Kevin Sigmon, read to them during Reading to Children Day on Thursday. Appalachian Power has provided this program to schools in communities where their employees live for the past few years. It is an opportunity for AEP employees to connect with schools and share the importance of reading.

Abingdon High School Library hosted the visitation of Therapy Dogs International Tail Waggin’ Tutors on Monday, November 24. This event was also supported by Highlands Educational Literacy Program.

|Damascus Middle School Celebrates Red Ribbon Week||12-09-2014||
Each year, communities across the nation recognize a week in October as Red Ribbon Week, in an effort to encourage students to lead healthy lives, free from the harmful effects of drugs. During the week of October 27-31, Damascus Middle School students showed their commitment to being drug-free as they celebrated Red Ribbon Week with a variety of fun activities.
|HHS Students Tour Fish Hatchery||12-08-2014||
On September 25th, students from Holston High School’s Ecology and Natural Resources Classes toured the Marion Trout Hatchery. Students got a look at the entire process of trout production. The Marion Trout Hatchery is the oldest of Virginia’s trout culture facilities. Trout are spawned, hatched, and reared at this facility, with many of them then transported to other stations. Trout from Marion are stocked in the waters of far southwest Virginia.
