Holston Teacher Wins Major Professional Award
Wed, January 7, 2015
Holston High School Agriculture Teacher Sarah Scyphers recently won a major competition, proving that she is at the top of her profession. On December 3rd, Scyphers competed in the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation’s annual Young Farmers Discussion Meet. The competition was held in Hot Springs, Virginia at the organization’s annual convention.
Scyphers and the other competitors tackled the following topics: “How should our nation’s policies balance concerns about food insecurity against concerns about the safety or environmental impact of modern agricultural technologies? What role should farmers have in discussing and debating these issues in our society and with our lawmakers?” While Scyphers and the others recognized the importance of social media and electronic communications for farmers, she noted that personal one-on-one conversations are still a valuable means of exchanging information.
All the participants received a $500 award. For winning, Mrs. Scyphers also received a John Deere Gator utility vehicle. She moves on to represent Virginia at the national level in January in San Diego, California.
