John S. Battle Cross-Country Celebrates a Successful Season

Congratulations to the John S. Battle Cross-Country team on a great 2016 season!!! With three of the top five graduating this past May, the Girls' team had to look to rebuild.
Returning varsity runners Chelsey C., Claire M., and Kansas H. helped lead new teammates Makenna P., Madison C., Colleen H., Nicole H., and Carrie S.. Five runners advanced to the Region 2A West Meet at Giles High School - Chelsey C., Claire M., Kansas H., Madison C., and Makenna P.. Chelsey C. finished in the top ten individuals at the Region Meet to advance to the State Meet at Great Meadow in The Plains, VA where she ran her personal best time on the 5K course.
The Boys' team led by seniors Cameron W., Nathan S., and Val H. along with teammates Andrew S., Josh B., Tyler S., Orrin O., Johnny H., Treyton C., Orryn M., Andrew L., Zane L., Bryson S., and David N. had a great season finishing third at Conference advancing them to the Region 2A West Meet. Cameron W. placed in the top ten individuals to advance to the State Meet where he finished his career with his personal best time. This year also marked the 10th annual Randy Smith Classic Cross-Country Meet hosted by John S. Battle CC at Sugar Hollow Park. In honor of this milestone and in appreciation for all of his hard work and dedication to this sport not only at Battle but for this whole surrounding area, Coach Randy Smith, who started the cross-country program at Battle and coached it for 28 years, was given a special t-shirt quilt of all of the Randy Smith t-shirts for the past 10 years.
